The Pikachu with Grey Felt Hat promo (085/225) is one of the most iconic modern Pokémon cards, created for the special Pokémon × Van Gogh Museum collaboration in Amsterdam in 2023. The artwork reimagines Pikachu in the pose and style of Vincent van Gogh's 1887 Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat, complete with the painter's signature felt hat and the swirling, impressionist brushwork that defines Van Gogh's late period. It belongs to the Black Star Promos set of the Scarlet & Violet series.
Why the Grey Felt Hat Pikachu is so rare
The card was handed out free to visitors at the Van Gogh Museum during the exhibition, but its instant popularity caused chaos. Scalpers and resellers overwhelmed the museum, leading to crowd-control problems and the promo being pulled from distribution just days after launch. That early withdrawal made the card extremely scarce relative to demand and turned it into a true grail card for collectors worldwide.

The promo exists in a standard and a reverse holo variant. Because so few graded copies exist relative to demand, high grades — especially PSA 10 and CGC 10 — command strong premiums, while raw near-mint copies remain the entry point for most collectors.
